Make your own Alcohol-Free Vanilla Extract!

For some, the idea of using vanilla extract containing alcohol does not appeal. Luckily, there is a way to make your own Alcohol Free version and it's pretty simple!

All you will need is the following:

  • Food grade glycerin. You might be able to get this from health food stores, Amazon or some pharmacies however please ensure it is food grade.
  • 3-4 vanilla beans per 250ml glycerin used
  • Water - ratio of 1 (water): 3 (glycerin)
  • Large or smaller bottles for storage (darker coloured bottles generally work better)

To start, simply mix your glycerin and water at a ratio of 3 to 1, i.e. 3 cups of glycerin to 1 cup of water.

Slice your vanilla beans length ways, keeping the top and bottom ends connected.

Submerge your pods in the liquid, making sure that the beans are completely covered.

Store in a dark spot within your pantry for 6-8 weeks (timing can vary depending on the strength you are after), giving it a good shake every week or so.

Once you've achieved the right flavour, open and enjoy your baking!

Please note, due to the addition of glycerin, your vanilla extract will have a more syrupy consistency and might not darken as much as an alcohol based extract. The flavours will still be beautiful though!
